The Fields Are White...AND Ready To Harvest :)

Hello Amazing Familia!!!

This week has been so awesome filled with so many miracles that I can hardly write all of them! However, I first want to start off with a supplemental spiritual swaria. One of the sweetest and go getting sisters of our Ward unfortunately died this week from the horrible Covid-19 virus. To give you a glimpse of her personality she raced her 1985 Corvette till she was 74, and then decided she needed to be doing more wholesome and enriching things like working in the temple baptistry. She was one of the saltiest, bubbliest, and all out extravagant old ladies I have ever met and I had the absolute pleasure of getting to know and become friends with her. Now, why am I telling you this? Thanks to our Savior Jesus Christ as well as the Plan of Salvation that our Heavenly Father has lovingly created for us, I know for a fact that she is resurrected and drag racing probably known with her husband in spirit paradise. It brings me so much comfort to know that we can and will all live again and be able to be with our families once this wonderful and exciting life eventually ends. Brothers and Sisters I know that we have a Savior and Heavenly Father that loves us, so much in fact that they provide us this earthly existence as well as a paradise full of joy and happiness following this life.

FOOD MIRACLES!!! My companions and I had the wonderful opportunity to be able to teach a member family from Elder Murray's home ward all about missionary work and how they as members can help further the work. As a thank you to us they sent us a full buffet from Taco Bell over Door Dash with a super sweet note thanking us for inspiring them to further the work even amongst Covid-19. Let me tell you Taco Bell has never tasted so good, but the more rewarding part was being able to teach the amazing Sy family in Sacramento, California. THEN that night after we had eaten way too much Taco Bell for lunch the Stake Presidents wife ordered us 5 pizzas and 1 Dessert Pizza from Dominoes. Her note was thanking us for helping her son prepare for his mission and getting him excited for  online missionary work. The amazing part was that her son had left for Fort Worth Texas that morning and yet she still wanted to serve others, namely her local missionaries! Finally, two days after all of this wonderful food, our Ward Mission Leader who is a recent convert to the Church, dropped by a whole Chicken and homemade macaroni and cheese that had been smoking for 6 hours in his brand new Traeger Smoker. Honestly I think I have gained weight this week from all the wonderful food but my companions and I joke that it's merely spiritual poundage.

FRIEND MIRACLES!!! Friend wise this week has been one of the best weeks I think I have ever had! Our friend Imaboo started this week off strong by practicing and preparing on his own time for his baptismal interview this week and promised us this week that he will follow the Savior Jesus Christ for the rest of his life and hopes that he can develop a testimony strong enough that he can convert others. When Imaboo told my companions and I this, we started tearing up and trying to tell him that his testimony was already beautiful and life altering all he needed was to be baptized by proper authority. Imaboo truly has been such a testimony builder and I am very excited for the impact that he is going to have on the future of the church in Bismarck. We were also able to meet with a super cool guy named Sunny who is Native American, is a mechanic for a local garage, and does artwork and a smidge of beadwork with his wife and kids on the weekend. Sunny is such an amazing guy and came to church and agreed to meet with us again this week to learn more about what makes us different from other dominant religions. We are so excited to meet with him again and hope that we can meet his family as well in the near future. Finally, we met up with a Facebook friend Eugene. Eugene actually came from a Facebook Ad that I personally designed and has a super rocky background and serious addictions. Not going to lie at first I was super scared of him, mainly because of the fluorescent green hair, the cloud of cigarette smoke billowing around him, and his past prison sentence. Yet, as we began teaching and talking to him the spirit spilled over me and I began seeing him as our Heavenly Father saw him. After that it was an amazing discussion in which we were able to invite him to change his life by following the example of the Savior Jesus Christ to be baptized. He agreed and is willing to make any changes necessary to feel happiness again. All of these people that we are teaching couldn't be more different, but I know that Heavenly Father loves everyone and knows them individually and places them in our paths to help them feel the fullness of His love.

Sweet Family and Friends life as a missionary is awesome! Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers, I truly have felt them each and every day, and I know that our savior loves you all so much! Miss and love you all so much, and look forward to writing to you next week!!!

I Haven't Seen The Sun In Like Four Days

Hello absolutely wonderful friends and Family!!!! This week has been so fun filled despite the snowstorms every morning, the freezing cold temperatures that Dakotans say is mild, and never ever seeing the sun. BUT IT'S ALL GOOD, life is supposed to be an adventure, mine just requires me to memorize a wind chill conversion chart and bathe in front of a Happy Light each morning.

This week's spiritual thought is all about following the sun. As I mentioned here in the Dakotas we can go weeks and weeks without seeing or feeling the sun and its warmth and to many this is a very hard and grueling daily challenge. In a study done by  tricitymed.org (I will neither confirm nor deny if I just Googled Sun and Mental Health Studies) they state that the Sun is essential to our mental health in that it improves our mood, Increases Vitamin D levels, Deeper Sleep, Stronger Bones, and can even lower blood pressure. The sun is exactly like our eternal home where we lived with our Heavenly Father and Mother. Here in this mortal world we are separated from the sun and our Heavenly Parents, left to test ourselves in the trials and darkness of mortality. Many times, we can feel abandoned or depressed, but our Savior and Heavenly Father have not forgotten us. They have given us tools similar to the Happy Light that allow us to feel and follow the warmth of the even when we are so far away from home. These tools are the scriptures, the temple, prayer, and above all our Savior Jesus Christ. Even in our dreariest days, emotional moments, and darkest nights, he is the Son and he will lead us home. I bear witness of this in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Friend Update!!! This week has been really good for Imaboo. He was able to receive his driver’s license and is now looking to purchase a car so he can "come to church quicker" (honestly we were just as delighted because that's a huge stress off our backs). He is such a Golden contact, and who would have known that just by reaching out to him over Instagram would end in him entering into the waters of baptism. Allison is not doing much better, she is still in the hospital and slipping in and out of consciousness, but still wants to meet with us and talk about everything from Family History to the wives of the twelve apostles. Unfortunately, the doctors have politely asked us to stop calling her because it puts "too much strain on her". Thank you all for all the prayers and blessings, I personally have felt it and I know she does as well.

Another super exciting thing that happened this week involves mission advertising. I had the wonderful opportunity to help President Howell organize and style his PowerPoint that he will be presenting to not only the area seventy but also to Elder Neil L. Anderson and Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the quorum of the twelve apostles. Unfortunately, Elder McMullin is not invited, but I'm still over the moon that I got to design a presentation for two members of the Quorum of the twelve. Another exciting event was the unveiling of the Altharia collection (which is chandelier translated in Arabic) which released a new set of Ads that will tie in our own individual lights into the beacon which is Christ. The missionaries and President and Sister Howell loved it and have even given me the nickname of Master of Presentations and Missionary Hype. One of the big parts of the Altharia collection was for me and my Ad committee team to start announcing new Advertisements that we will be running on Google and Missions that we will be adopting for advertising purposes, so look out friends and cousins that are on missions I might be swooping in ;-)

All in all, I love y'all (My Dakota accent is starting to slip in :)) I don't really have much else to say, just working and trying to be the best soldier I can in the Lord's army!! Stay safe from Covid-19, all ten Hospital beds out here in Nodak are full so we're done for, but regardless stay safe and have an absolutely positively awesome week!!!

Sent with love and a smidge of Frostbite,

Elder McMullin :-)

A Week So Bad It's Funny :-)

Hello, Friends of Family!!!! As you can tell by the email caption it has been an absolutely crazy week, with the thrill of adventure at every turn, but also so spiritually strengthening and motivating. This week I would like to talk all about putting faith in the Lord and trusting that He knows what's best for us. My companions and I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Rapid City and Mt. Rushmore to capture its fall beauty and hopefully begin creating a content library that can be used by all missionaries to assist in content creation and advertisement development.  We all ordered cameras for this weeklong trip and had express shipping to be sure that we would have them in time. As the days went by Elder Post Nikon arrived, Elder Murray's Sony was delivered, yet Elder McMullin's Canon was nowhere to be seen. After calling the UPS store around 15 times I found out that they had lost the package and were currently looking for it in one of the warehouses. If that wasn't bad enough I also lost my wallet somewhere in the process of moving three apartments simultaneously. To top it all off I also got pulled over and now have a lovely fluorescent orange speeding ticket decorating my study table. This is probably one of the worst days I think I have ever had, but as I mentioned when we put faith in the lord and trust in Him we begin to see that all things happen for a reason. I was luckily able to find my wallet in the garbage disposal (don't ask how it got there) and because we took so long to find my wallet it gave time for there to be a Police rotation, so that I was able to be pulled over by a member of the Church who reduced my ticket by 50%. I was also able to be an actor for a Come unto Christ Ad which is now receiving a lot of attention by church headquarters and might be aired on the Church website, in my eyes way more exciting than a camera. So, all in all the Lord does not give us bad days, but rather gives us an opportunity to recognize His hand in each of our lives.

In other news about our travels, Mt Rushmore and Rapid City were absolutely AMAZING!!! However, according to 2 Nephi 2:11 "it must needs be, that there is opposition in all things". Recently Covid-19 cases are on the rise in the Dakotas and currently North Dakota is now the nation's number one Hotspot. In a report shared by President Howell from the New York times "hospitals beds are already full, yet thousands of people daily test positive in the Great Plains and are being turned away". As we were driving to Mt. Rushmore we learned that we might have been exposed to the virus and would need to cancel nearly all of our plans with other missionaries and members and self-isolate in a hastily renovated apartment. Luckily we were still able to take photos in Custer National park as long as we stayed 20 feet away from all people, while wearing gloves and masks. Needless to say, the trip didn't turn out quite the way we wanted but luckily we were blessed to have no symptoms and on the last day were able to travel to Rushmore and film an awesome Native American Hoop Dance Video. Currently with the current rising conditions of Covid-19 our mission is being moved back to phase one meaning we are only allowed to go outside for two hours of the day and must order all of our groceries and supplies online and live stream into Sacrament Meetings and other various missionary meetings. I am so grateful to be a missionary at this unique time not only because there's never a dull moment, but also because I have the wonderful opportunity of trailblazing and experimenting with new ways to further the wonderful work of our Savior Jesus Christ.

Friend update! The people we are teaching are progressing wonderfully!!! Imaboo was put on date for baptism on October 31st and will be one of the first ever Instagram Baptisms! Allison is also progressing and has been keeping the word of wisdom and law of Chastity for two weeks now and is loving the happiness she feels when she obeys the commandments.  However, we got a serious call this week that both of her kidneys are failing and might require an organ transplant in the next couple of weeks or she may pass away. She is also extremely high-risk to Covid-19 meaning that she won't be able to leave the hospital, receive any visitors, go to church, or be baptized until early December if Covid-19 calms down. Please pray for Allison that she can become healthy again and hopefully be able to attend Church and be baptized as soon as possible.

So sorry this is such a sad and depressing email, but I want to let you know that I'm having the time of my life, and that if we put our trust in the Lord and seek out His hand in our lives, an amazing blessing will be found!!! Love and miss you all so much! Stay safe and stay warm as winter and flu season approach!!!

General Conference

Hello awesome Friends and Family!!!!

This week has been absolutely amazing, not only because of the awesome people we were able to meet or the exciting new things we are doing as an Ad committee but because we were able to hear divine revelation from our modern-day prophet and apostles! One of the key takeaways that really stood out to me this General Conference was the amazing wisdom of focusing on being welcoming and kind to everyone because after all, we are all Brothers and Sisters. A key phrase stated by President Nelson is "race, gender or economic standing means nothing in the eyes of the Lord. He loves us all and wants the best for us". I love this bold statement, because in a world so infatuated with lust, greed, and power positions it's important to have an eternal perspective and remember that this life is a test, but not our end goal. Rather, our end goal is to be among the righteous in the Celestial Kingdom and stand boldly before the judgment bar that we tried the best we possibly could to remember our divine identify and hold high its statutes  Friends and Family, my spiritual Brothers and Sisters, let us heed the words of our amazing latter-day prophet and put aside worldly titles or labels. The Lord our Savior Jesus Christ loves us, not because of our worldly standing or position, but by the content and purity of our heart and spirit, proving that we are indeed trying to be like Him and following His example. Granted this may be very hard, but in the words of Jeffery R. Holland "We cannot float around on our cloud of comfortable Christianity". One of my favorite primary songs is a reminder of these lessons in that we "are trying to be like Jesus, [we are] following in His ways. [We are] trying to love as He did, in all that [we] do and say. At times [we] am tempted to make the wrong choice, but  [we should try to listen to the still small voice whispering, 'love one another as Jesus loves you', try to show kindness in all that you do. Be gentle and loving indeed and in thought, for these are the things Jesus [Christ our Savior and Redeemer] taught".

If the General Conference alone didn't make this week amazing, the fact that we had four of our friends that are currently learning the Gospel only made the Conference that much sweeter. Emaboo, Allison, Lemar, and Eugene all watched the General Conference for the first time and it was absolutely amazing to hear their responses after the Conference was adjourned. One of my favorite remarks was from Lemar who only two weeks ago learned about our Church remarked that he was "super impressed and touched that [we] as a church help those in need with our funds and serve as Christ would, rather than buy BMW's, Mansions, Private jets for your pastors and apostles". Another favorite comment was from Emaboo who said, "he loved the focus on children, about how we should teach them how to pray respectfully and with confidence and that the Lord hears our prayers and loves each one of us individually". Everyone that we are teaching is thriving in the Gospel and it is so beautiful to see how we are spiritual sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father seek out the light of the gospel, and when found find true happiness and peace in this tumultuous world.

As mentioned earlier some exciting things with Ads have been happening! We recently have started implementing a weekly Tuesday Showcase where we as an Ad committee, working alongside Facebook Admins and directors, can showcase what we are working on and what success we are seeing. Let's just say this showcase is a hit, so much in fact that President Howell is installing Wi-Fi in our apartment and car so that we don't have to worry about bad connection interrupting our showcase. It's also been amazing because Missionaries are getting more excited about Social Media work in general and have even started submitting suggestions for Ads or asking if they can help with creating or shooting Ads. But the best part of all is that because the Missionaries are getting super excited and even reposting Ads to their personal profiles, we are seeing jumps in people reaching out to us. This week alone we found 70 new people, 45 of whom are interested in our church and its divine Gospel. President Howell has even asked if my companions and I can leave Tomorrow to travel the entire mission, capturing its beauty, its missionaries, and processing them into an Ad library that could in the future become a benchmark for Missions worldwide. I am so grateful to be in this unique position at such a unique time of History and hope that as I begin adopting missions and developing their advertising campaigns that I can help further the work of the Lord even quicker.

All in all, so grateful for my Mission experience thus far, and also thankful for a Heavenly Father that provided modern-day prophets and apostles to guide us through these "turbulent" times. Whether things get better, or things get worse, I know that we have a Heavenly Father that knows and loves us and would never do something to us that wasn't for our own good. Love you all so much my Brothers and Sisters and look forward to writing to you next week from Mt. Rushmore!!!

Pumpkins, Pumpkins, Everywhere!!!

Fantastic Adam,

Happy October (The Spookiest Time of the Year)!  Happy three months being out on your mission (just in case you missed it, it was on Oct.1).  Your Mom knows all of the big anniversaries of your mission service:  New Years Day is six months, April Fools will be 9 months and July 1 will be a year (big dates in my world as I miss you much).  We are so happy that you are enjoying your mission and are finding so much joy in building the Lord's Kingdom.  There is nothing you could be doing greater than the work you are about now, so work hard.  The real highlight of our week is being able to talk to you in person and hear all about the continuing wild adventures of Elder McMullin.   We talked with Aunt Patrece and Uncle Steve yesterday and they told us how much they enjoy reading your letters each week.  I guess Grant was the write two sentences home a week missionary (lame) so your letters are refreshing and fun for them, you do such a nice job.  We also hope you got your new camera and new computer bag (both should have come yesterday) and that you got an appointment to get the bracket on your permanent retainer fixed.

We hope you are also enjoying General Conference and the wonderful talks being given.  Civil unity is a huge theme this Conference, one for which we all need.  I really loved President Oaks talk about the First Amendment Right of 'Peaceable Assembly'.  He explained the fault of all of the 'Black Lives Matter' Riots of the summer so well--- we do not have the right to violent demonstration under the Constitution.  I want to take his explanation and use it when I teach Constitution because it was so clear of how to have civil disagreements the right way (his is a lawyer by profession and a former Utah Supreme Court Justice so he knows his subject well).  I love to feel the steadying hand of prophets during this turbulent time.  We love you so much and are so proud of the service you are giving!!!!

Highland Happenings

Lucky Luke News:
The big news of the week is American Fork High School Marching Band just swept every award again at the second competition of the season in Logan.  They spend so much time cleaning their show this past week and it really looked good yesterday night when they crushed the other competitors by five points.  They took outstanding music, visual, color guard, and drum line as well taking first place.  The band director listened to the judges comments on the show on the bus ride home from the previous show (Herriman) and he told the band that three of the judges were laughing joyously at the fun of the show!  No one looks as good as they do and no one sounds as good as they do--- it is so fun to watch them.  Luke was fighting a cold yesterday (no not COVID, just a regular cold-- I checked :) and so we were worried how he would do, but he did great, put his whole heart into it and slayed it.  He got home about 1:00am this morning not covered in glitter this week as the baritone celebration got rowdy this week.  They each get a bottle of Martenelli's apple cider an toast their big win as a section and then take big swigs then shake the bottles really hard and spray each other with the remaining drink.  Luke was dripping wet and had to have a shower before he could go to bed, but he had an epic time.  In other news Luke is not liking AFHS hybrid schedule where they have split the student body in half and half are in school for two days while the other are online and then they switch.  He says homework is so much harder because the teachers don't explain it as well online and everything takes so much longer to figure out.  The end of first quarter is next Wednesday so we have our fingers crossed that all will go well with Luke's grades (as he has never gotten an A - he is a pretty safe bet).  As you saw from the video Luke sent you he lit his hand on fire in Chemistry and it scared his Mom to death, even though no one was injured.  This school year has been the busiest Luke has ever had and he is handling it like a boss.

Delightful Dad News
Dad's foot is still a pain!!!!  We hope that he can get some relief as he goes to a podiatrist (foot doctor) this week, but he is still hobbling around in his boot.  I think Dad was more sad to miss the deer hunt this year than Luke was especially when he learned that Garn got a massive five point Elk (the same size as the one hanging in our big garage).  All of Garn's boys were up with him (except Bryant) to help get it out, but Dad still wishes he could have been there.  Patrick also got his first buck deer this year (smaller 2 point -- and he couldn't have been more proud!).  No one else got anything, so I see it as Uncle Garn's blessing of having a missionary out :).  Dad also made final plans for the rocket booster tanks from Florida to find their final home in the landfill in East Carbon-- it takes a lot of work to move something that big so far.  On a very sad note Dad's oldest cousin Jeff (Todd and Lindsey McMullin's older brother) died this week.  He just retired in March from his accounting job of 50 years and was beating cancer when he contracted COVID.   He seemed to be doing OK for awhile but COVID caused pneumonia in his lungs and after that he went really fast.  It was a big shock for the entire McMullin family.  We went to a viewing for just family yesterday and it was so sad.  They took Jeff's body from Jenkins Soffe Mortuary to the South Jordan Cemetery on the back of his tractor.  His sweet widow Claudia climbed into the cab of the tractor being driven by her son and sat on the fender just like she had done for 49 years with her husband as he cut hay.  It was a moving experience as the family then walked to the cemetery following the casket on the tractor.  You never know what life is going to bring.  On a more positive note Dad is becoming a master lawn mower since you left.  He always makes Luke mow the front islands of the Old home but the back is looking as good as the front these days.  Dad is also 'Mr. Dependable' when it comes to serving as a Band Dad.  He couldn't help load the band to go to Logan because of the funeral, but he stayed up till midnight to travel down to Dear Old AF High to work hard for an hour to unload them and take Luke's six bottles of Martenelli's to the baritones so they could celebrate their win -- an amazing guy your Dad!

Marvelous Mom News:
The band had a chili and soup cooking competition this week to feed the band kids during a six hour cleaning camp.  Dad and I volunteered to help serve and I entered my chicken and wild rice soup into the competition and guess what. . . . I won best soup!!!!!  I got a cute red apron with the band logo embroidered on the front.  I have not won anything in a long time so it was super exciting for me (see the picture bellow of the huge trophy- ah.... I mean apron :).  Just so you do not think I won because I was the only one who entered a soup, there were about 20 soups there that I beat out (victory tastes ----savory).   I am also half way though the two UEN classes I am taking this fall, a big deal as I have really had to stretch my technology muscles to complete.  I even submitted my last assignment all by myself, Luke didn't have to help me at all--- he was so proud of me!  We also had the fantastic opportunity to have our first Kick-Butt McMullin Work Party this fall as we pulled all of the annuals and trimmed all of the bushes and perennials in the front yard.  Then we planted about 600 tulips and seven flats of pansies and put out all of the pumpkins from the garden.  We also mowed, trimmed, and blew the front yard---whew.  It took all . . .stinkin. . . day. . . to do (notice in the 'before' picture that it was so early in the morning that the carriage lights are still on) and we didn't finish until 5 (now look at the 'after' pictures and oh and awe).  At which time we all drug out tired butts in for a dinner of cereal and watched movies for the rest of the night.  We really missed you as you add so much spice to conversations and an extra pair of hands is such a blessing on that kind of day (if you had been there were usually would have been able to put up the outside Halloween decorations, which we didn't get to).  A major advancement of our technique this year is we didn't do the 40 wheelbarrows full of annuals and trimmings to the back like in years past instead we loaded Ladasha's bed and made three dump trips (it was revolutionary). As we move into winterizing both the Old Home and the Highland Hacienda there will be many Kick-Butt McMullin Work Parties to come.  A positive about so much work to be done is that the fry sauce and Diet Dr. Pepper are flowing in great abundance :).

News From The Hood:

  • Aunt Pam and Uncle Garn are flying out to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania this Friday Oct. 9, to go with Bryant (Elder McMullin) through the temple for his first time!  They are so excited to see him and share in this wonderful experience.  They are flying out and coming back all in one day so its going to be fun and exhausting.
  • Dave Collier had his 70th birthday bash this past week.  He looks so good and acts so young you would never know he was that age.  Robin ordered the cutest sign for the front lawn (see picture below) and I want to order the same kind of thing on the day you come home from your mission -- although it won't be to wish you a happy 70th birthday :)
  • Makenna Kondel now Christensen, received her endowments in the Mount Timp Temple this last week.  The only ones that could attend were Kari and Neil and Uncle Tom and Aunt Dixy, but they were so thrilled to be able to be with her.  Their sealing date is not until next month, but they are slowly being able to make their wedding in June--- eternal.  Weird COVID year.
  • We were sad to hear that the Bushman's that moved into the Bringhurst home all have COVID this week.  We are really scared for the wonderful little girl (I can't remember her name) who is in the wheelchair.  We are praying for them and ask that you will as well.
  • Another sad happening of the week is Case Leloux's younger brother died of a brain clot, he was only 45.  We visited and took Case and Roxann a statue of Christ and a sympathy letter, they were very shook up and sad.
  • Lone Peak High School Marching Band won first in the 6A small band division in Logan.  They don't compete against AF or the other big bands but they ruled the small bands.  Go Knights! (Luke edit- AF Still won. LP beat the little schools, and it's not nice to crush little school dreams. I am ashamed of you.)
  • The leaves are turning very fun colors and their is a bit of a nip in the air Autumn has officially arrived in Highland.

Well my beloved boy that is a summary of our busy week.  We miss you so much and are sending you lots of loving thoughts and air kisses.  Stay safe and healthy and work hard everyday.  I remember thinking at the beginning of my mission that it would last forever, but the time goes by so fast.  Make every day your best effort and one you would be proud to give our Heavenly Father and you will do a mission right!

All Our Love!!!
